  1. The diety at Thiruvarur in Thanjavur district is Valmikinathar (moolavar), also known as Somaskanda Thyagesha, and his consort is Bhoga Amman. I think Ponniah indulges in some exquisite wordplay here, terming the Lord “Bhoga Thyagesha” – Sensual Renunciate. The piece is no doubt shringara focused as all varnams are, and they are all more or less explicit. I think we may have been less coy about this in Ponniah’s times =)
